How I Stay Ahead of Seasonal Allergies
Hey Everyone! It's that time of year (at least in Arizona) where allergies are flaring up. It took me a bit to figure out what worked for me and what didn't so I thought I'd share what works for me! Before I get too much into this post I want to say that I am NOT a doctor and I am not giving out medical advice. If you have concerns please ask your doctor. I am just stating what I have found and what works for me.
My allergies affect my eyes the most. It can get so bad that people ask me if I'm okay because my eyes are so red, puffy, and swollen that it looks like I've been crying for hours straight. I find that taking allergy eye drops ahead of time (even if I feel like I don't need it at the time) really helps. If I wait to put eye drops in until my eyes start bothering my it'll be too late and they will still be itchy and red all day. I have two allergy eye drops that I use.
The first eye drops I use are called Similasan. These work really well but not as effective as Allaway. However, I still really like them because they still work well AND they don't sting my eyes at all. They feel very soothing.
The second one (Allaway) works really well and I use it when I first wake up in the morning and before I go to bed. If it's an extra bad day I may use it in between those times. These work really well but can sting my eyes when I first put them in so I don't like using them much.
I also get really stuffy nose almost to the point to where it is difficult to breath. I have a few different things I do to help with it. My first form of defense for a stuffy nose is taking a whiff of lemon essential oil first thing when I wake up. For some reason it helps clear out my sinuses to the point where I can actually blow my nose.
I also make an allergy oil roller. You can find the recipe here. I roll this on my arms and wrists and then put a little bit on the tip of my nose.
I just recently bought a new nasal spray and decided to give it a try and it has worked wonders! I use it at least twice a day. It's called XCLEAR and it has worked for me the past three weeks that I've been using it.
My last form of defense of having a stuffy nose is having a diffuser/ humidifier. I have a small one that I have basically right next to the head of my bed and it works great. Sometimes I put oils in, sometimes I don't but I always have it running every night. I start the diffuser about a half hour before I plan on going to bed.
I don't know if it's from allergies or because of the dry summer before monsoon season hits but my throat is dry constantly, to the point where I can lose my voice mid sentence. Drinking plenty of water helps with that and by plenty of water I mean LOTS of water. I drink around a gallon a day. I have a 40 ounce stainless steel water bottle that I carry around everywhere with me.
Lastly, when I need a little extra help I take allergy medication. It took me a long time to find an over-the-counter allergy medication that was actually non drowsy and that actually worked. The ones that worked made me fall asleep (even the ones marked non drowsy) and the ones that didn't make me fall asleep didn't seem to help much. However, I finally found some that actually work AND that don't make me fall asleep! I REPEAT THEY ACTUALLY WORK FOR ME AND DON'T MAKE ME FALL ASLEEP! These are called Genexa Allergy-D. I take it according to the label (2 chewable tablets at the sign of allergies and then every 6-8 hours as needed). Also, they are chewable and acai berry flavored!
