Antioxidants and Their Benefits
Hi everyone! I thought I'd talk about anti-oxidants, why they're needed, and their benefits. First, what are antioxidants?
Antioxidants are substances that inhibit oxidation. Our body produces its own anti-oxidants though the ability to produce anti-oxidants declines with age. Glutathione, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, bioflavonoids, CoQ10, selenium, zinc, manganese, and copper are some antioxidants.
So the next question: why are antioxidants needed?
Antioxidants fight free radicals which can be harmful to your health. Our bodies produce free radicals from basic bodily functions but exposure to radiation, pollution, tobacco, drugs, alcohol, certain medication, over training, stress, and a poor diet can cause damage as well. Free radicals can damage DNA, cellular membranes, and fats stored in blood cells. When there are more free radicals than antioxidants the aging process accelerates and oxidation occurs. Oxidative stress has been linked to Alzheimer's disease, arteriosclerosis, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and more.
Having more antioxidants in your body will help the antioxidant vs. free radical balance. Antioxidants are needed because our bodies use them to lessen the impact of the free radicals and oxidative stress.
